It was a dark and stormy night. But our intrepid knitter was on a mission. All her yarn needles had mysteriously vanished and she had a deadline to meet. She was on her way to Joann’s to get a much coveted Chibi and a few extra needles just in case.
She was also looking forward to some quiet time a Borders books, in the knitting section pouring over whatever might tickle her fancy.
She arrived at Joann’s at aproxomately 8 o’clock, and immediatly headed to the yarn section of the store.
The site that met her there left her knees wobbly, she nearly fainted. Every shelf was chock full to overflowing with yarn. In a store known for it’s sparce supply this was just amazing. She briefly browsed through the shelves of yarn. There were even new yarns, enticing interesting blends, wools, cottons wools blended with cotton! But she quickly turned away and went to the knitting accesories aisle. There she found the coveted Chibi and the extra yarn needles. She laughed at the Knifty Knitter booklet thinking about how much better her’s would be.
It was getting late. She realized that she should move on to her next destination. Quickly she sprinted to the front of the store to check out. As she stood in line she saw that the weather had turned for the worse. The wind was picking up and the sky was getting too dark for this time of night.
Ambulances and a fire truck sped by. She new something was wrong.
As she stepped out into the storm she barely heard the ring of her cel phone above the din.
“Hello?” she answered, as stepped back into the shelter of the store.
“Hi, uh,where are you?” (it was her husband) “there is a tornado warning for our county.”
“I’m at the Joann’s near the mall.”
“Well you should get out of there and head north the storm is headed your way.”
She got off the phone and informed the attendant at the service desk that there was a tornado warning, then turned to start out of the store.
The phone rang again.
“Are you still there? Have you left yet? There are 4 tornadoes headed toward the mall.”
She got off the phone after assuring her husband she would leave in a moment, and again informed the store staff.
The staff person looked at her and said, “Thanks, you are very informative but you are scaring me!”
Then made the announcement that they were closing the store due to the impending weather.
Our intrepid knitter quickly scrubbed the idea of spending the rest of the evening oggling knitting books as she would rather not fly away with them in the storm.
She instead started to head home. Her way was blocked by many hazards. First the emergency vehicles that had passed the store. Then the hoardes of cars full of others trying to get safely home.
Lightning crashed all around, hitting at the right and left sometimes quite close. Thunder crashed and the wind pushed the vehichle back and forth on the road. But out intrepid knitter never wavered. She had one purpose that was to get that Chibi home and finish her swatches by her deadline.
So on she pressed through the storm, taking back roads to avoid traffic and the construction that plagued her town. Surely her road would be flooded out, so she had to go the back way.
Finally, after what seemed like hours she made it home safe and sound. After enjoying a bowl of ice cream and a cup of Tension Tamer tea, she settled down for a nice night’s sleep Chibi in hand and a smile on her face.
The End.
