Then and now…

My one skein pal recently shared how she had learned to knit, and how she had progressed to now. In conversations recently this has come up with me and I realise that I have hinted about the ‘ten year scarf’ but never really talked about my own knitting history.

I don’t really remember when I learned to knit. I have knowledge of it but no real memory. I know I had a class in school in about 6th grade, the girls and boys  were split up. I dunno what the boys did, I suppose they went out and helped the teacher change the oil in his car..

We did all kinds of things, we learned to do candlewicking (ooh I am dating myself because it was ultra popular back then), needlepoint, cross stitch and of course knitting. I do remember making an AWFUL orange and yellow scarf for a guy I had a crush on.

Knitting didn’t stick at that point, I liked cross stitch and needle point so I did that. I did that for a while with other bits of craftiness, all items being made for other people as gifts. The only item I have left from all that is this jacket I made in high school.

Ut oh now you all know what my nickname was..

Then in college my room mate was a big time cross stitcher, her Dad was too. So I picked it up again and got quite good at it. I also tried to knit a scarf for Brian who was then my boyfriend.. It was torturouse..I picked it up and put it down off and on..over ten years! A 12 inch wide thing in garter stitch DK weight yarn, on size 7 needles.. oi.. It is awful.. it was nice and soft yarn, then I washed it and ran it through the dryer! Pure plastic ick acrylic yarn! I still have it, tucked up in the closet, to remind me of what was!Maybe I will dig it out and show it to you some day.. when I am feeling brave!
But once we got married and had a few kids.. well lets just say cross stitch and kids don’t mix!

So I really didn’t to anything for a while! Then Brian gave me some mad money, I bought a set of knitting looms with it. Within an half an hour of recieving it I had a baby hat made..Then in no time I had a baby bootie made! I was hooked! As they say the rest is history!

And just think .. way back when my brother had one of those knitting bobs you know those little things with the four pegs to make cords? I was soo jealous because he could make those cords in a flash and I just couldn’t get it!

Look at me now!!!!
