My Grandmother’s House

My Grandmother’s house was always where our family gathered. After church every Sunday we were expected for lunch. And we were there. My Dad indicates that she wasn’t such a good cook, but I always enjoyed my dinner! Then it was off outside running and playing, wandering through the wood trails of the back woods on the mountain, or playing upstairs with games and toys she kept for us there.

I suppose it is natural to think about long gone loved ones around the holidays, I never really think about how I miss Nan Nan, I just remember the good things. I have absolutelyvivid memories of the sounds, and sights and the feel of things that were in her house.

Lately I also find myself influenced by the textiles and items that were at her house. I have a few quilts from her house that I got when she died, and I have been thinking lately of how I can reproduce one of them in knit.

I have finally figured out a way to do it, I just have to find the yarn, and the time to get it done. I always liked this quilt because it is sort of two patterns. If you look at it one way it is squares, but if you look at it another way it is stars!

I am also working on another item that was in my grandmother’s house. A little mat that used crochet and bottle caps.. it was always sitting under the ‘cookie jar’ which was really one of those round silver ice buckets with penguins on it.. I have one now I need a mat under it!

I have reproduced it with my little knitting looms, but the feel isn’t right. The original one was made with mercerized cotton crochet thread.

Right now though I have another item to work on for another home. I am working on joining squares that were donated to make a blanket for the Earl’s new house.

These squares have taken a long journey. They were made in China by workers at a hat factory. Kim of Kimberli New York was there, as her hats are made at that factory. While she was there the workers asked about the hurricane, and the effects. They decided they would make squares for blankets for the hurricane victims. So Kim, brought the squares back. And gave some to me. I am hoping they will make a great house warming gift for the Earls. I have been a bit slow on getting the work done.. but it seems this is the perfect time to do it.

Please if you have not stop by Knitter’s Build a House..cause you can’t have a housewarming gift…if you don’t have a house to warm.
